If you know the Walt Disney characters:
"Tinker Bell", Snow White" "Cruella De
Vil" and the wicked fairy "Maleficent" in Sleeping Beauty,
then you are already familiar with some of the wonderful artwork by Marc
Davis.
Marc Davis was born on March 30th
1913 in Bakersfield California. He studied at the Kansas City Art institute,
the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and the Otis Art Institute
at the Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles. In the 1930s Marc
Davis was one of the "nine old men" Walt Disney chose to develop
the new art of animation. Disney borrowed the phrase "nine old men"
from a description of the nine U.S. Supreme Court Justices. After a basic
training period at the Disney Studios, and because of his skill in the
anatomy of the human figure, Davis was promoted to assistant animator on
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs where Davis helped create "Snow White."

Less well known but equally impressive
are Marc Davis paintings, watercolors and drawings of bulls and bullfighters,
nudes and harlequins and the warriors and jungle life of Papua, New Guinea.
